Tenma back in top form in winning Starlet (G2)

Sunday | December 08, 2024

Tenma returned to her winning ways Saturday at Los Alamitos in the $200,000 Starlet S. (G2), besting Look Forward by nearly two lengths and give Bob Baffert a record 11 wins in the race for 2-year-old fillies.

Third in the Oak Leaf S. (G2) two months ago, Tenma redeemed herself with an excellent effort on Saturday. She and Look Forward were very close together from the outset, with Tenma taking a narrow advantage for the first half-mile, then Look Forward got her head in front around the final bend and into the stretch. Tenma forged ahead once again inside the final furlong and drew off late to stop the timer in 1:44.16 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast track.

”It’s great to win the Starlet again,” said Baffert, who was winning his eighth straight running of the race. “She had been training really well. She took a step back after Del Mar, so that’s why we decided to pass the Breeders’ Cup [Juvenile Fillies]. She was back to her old self and I thought she would bring her A game today and Juan (Hernandez) is riding with such confidence.”

Tenma, winner of the Del Mar Debutante S. (G1) in September, is now 3-0-1 in four starts and has earned $369,000 for her owner Baoma Corp.
