Cezanne very strong in San Carlos S. (G2)
Cezanne kicked clear of Principe Carlo at the top of the stretch to win Saturday’s $200,000 San Carlos S. (G2) at Santa Anita Park.
This was the first stakes win for the 5-year-old since taking the Kona Gold S. (G2) in April, and also just his second outing since that win 11 months ago.
Cezanne had some competition early in Saturday’s 6 ½-furlong race, battling with Canadian Pride and Principe Carlo through a quarter-mile in :22.67. The trio was in close proximity around the turn, with Canadian Pride giving way at the quarter pole. Flavien Prat set down Cezanne for the stretch drive, and he pulled away comfortably to win by 2 ½-lengths in 1:23.45 on a fast track.
“We missed our timing with him,” said winning trainer Bob Baffert. “He had a few setbacks, otherwise he would have been in the Big ‘Cap. He’s a good handicap horse. He showed his class. I think he is a mile and quarter horse. We’ll keep him going and look toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). I like what I saw today.”
Cezanne, who has won four of six starts and earned $267,000, is owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and St. Elias Stable.
