Breeders’ Cup 2024: Eight runners across two days
The Baffert barn will have a busy Nov. 1-2 in the Breeders’ Cup this year at Del Mar with eight horses entered in five different races over the two days of championships.
Baffert has a total of 18 Breeders’ Cup winners, tied as the second-most of all time, and is the all-time leading trainer by purses won with over $40 million.
Friday will feature a trio of colts in the Juvenile (G1) and two distaffers in the Juvenile Fillies (G1).
Baffert’s pair in the Juvenile Fillies, race 7 at 3:25 pm PT, are Non Compliant and Nooni. Non Compliant is undefeated in two starts, including the Oct. 5 Oak Leaf S. (G2) in her most recent start. Nooni was a convincing winner of the Aug. 10 Sorrento S. (G3) at Del Mar and finished second in the Oak Leaf. The fillies will be next to each other in the starting gate: Non Compliant in post 7 and Nooni in post 8.
In the Juvenile, race 9 at 4:45 pm PT, Baffert will saddle Getaway Car (post 2), Citizen Bull (6) and Gaming (7). Getaway Car has won twice at Del Mar, including the Best Pal S. (G3), and finished second to Citizen Bull in the American Pharoah S. (G1). Undefeated Gaming’s only two starts have come at Del Mar, including a victory in the Futurity (G1).
On Saturday’s card Baffert will have runners in three different races: Newgate in the Classic (G1), Muth in the Dirt Mile (G1) and Pleasant in the Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).
Pleasant is in the first Breeders’ Cup race of the day Saturday, race 4 at noon PT. The lightly-race filly has yet to start in a stakes and has raced just once this year, a sharp five-length allowance score on Sept. 22.
The $7 million Classic, race 8 at 2:41 pm PT, drew 14 horses, with Newgate in post 13. The 4-year-old won the Santa Anita H. (G1) earlier this year and will be reunited with Frankie Detorri, who was aboard at Santa Anita.
The Dirt Mile is race 12 at 5:25 pm PT, with Muth in post 10 of 14. The 3-year-old won the Arkansas Derby (G1) in April and was second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).
