Baffert’s Corniche named Eclipse Champion 2-year-old Male
The brilliant undefeated colt Corniche won the Eclipse Award as Champion 2-year-old Male during Thursday’s ceremony at Santa Anita Park.
Corniche is the sixth 2-year-old Eclipse winner for Bob Baffert, joining luminaries such as American Pharoah, Game Winner and Lookin at Lucky.
Corniche reached the finish line first in all three of his starts, capped by his win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), which followed his victory in the American Pharoah S. (G1). He also won his maiden special weight debut at Del Mar.
“He has mechanics that are almost like American Pharoah,” Baffert said after Corniche’s Breeder’s Cup score. “He’s just got that long loping stride. He covers a lot of ground.”
Owned by the Speedway Stables of K.C. Weiner and Peter Fluor, Corniche has earned $1,262,000 to date.
Corniche has spent the winter at WinStar Farm’s layup and training facility as he readies for a 2022 campaign.
